From seasonal terrace to profitable year round space
By the quay in Helsingborg lies Hamnkrogen, where the outdoor dining area is a central part of the business. With the sea as the closest neighbour, the views are a great asset, but also a challenge when weather and wind change quickly.
– When the weather was in control, it became difficult to attract guests, plan staffing and achieve the turnover we wanted from our outdoor dining area. We needed to create better conditions for the restaurant’s most important space, says Jonas Johansson, restaurateur and co-owner.
For Hamnkrogen, the challenge was clear. An attractive outdoor dining area with high customer value was not being fully utilised. Wind and temperature affected both the guest experience and how much of the area could actually generate revenue.
The goal became to create an outdoor dining area that works consistently, where more seats can be used more often, operations become easier to plan and the area contributes to higher and more even turnover.
The investment in weather protection has clearly paid off – Hamnkrogen has increased its turnover from EUR 1.3 million to EUR 2.5 million.
A flexible solution for year round opening
In dialogue with Mats Wedbäck from BRIXX, the recommendation became a combination of the height adjustable glass balustrade ClickitUp, parasols and heaters to create a more usable, flexible and profitable outdoor dining area.
The solution makes it possible to adapt the outdoor dining area to the weather. When the wind increases, the glass is raised and creates effective protection. When the weather allows, it is lowered and opens up towards the sea. Together with parasols and heaters, Hamnkrogen today has an outdoor dining area that works all year round.
– We did not want to change the feeling – we wanted to secure it. With today’s weather protection, we can use the outdoor dining area every day, says Jonas.
Increased turnover through more even occupancy
Hamnkrogen has created an outdoor dining area that has gone from a weather dependent surface to a stable part of the business, where guests gladly remain seated even when the weather shifts. This provides more even occupancy, more sittings and a significantly better financial result than before the investment in weather protection.
An important part of the success is also the feeling of the place. The weather protected outdoor dining area has become an open and welcoming meeting place where people of different ages gather.
- We want the outdoor dining area to feel like a living room for the whole city. Here, young and old should socialise and feel at home. The mix of people creates a safe and lively environment and that is a big part of why guests gladly come back.
